Riverside Academy Makes History with its First ever E-Voting Election

For the first time in its history, Riverside Academy has conducted its prefectorial elections electronically, with the process taking place in the school’s STEM Lab in Block E.

The Primary and JHS elections gave pupils from Basic 1 to JHS 3 a hands-on opportunity to elect their leaders and participate in school governance. The initiative forms part of Riverside’s Future Ready Framework, under the Tech & Digitisation pillar, while reducing paper use and supporting sustainability.

Riverside plans to alternate between manual and electronic elections in future years, giving pupils exposure to different electoral systems and practical experience of democratic processes. The school’s electoral programme includes a campaign period, manifesto presentations and rallies.

To promote responsible leadership and democratic values, candidates are not permitted to distribute gifts or tokens, helping to discourage vote buying. Printed campaign posters are also prohibited, encouraging organic campaigningthrough communication, engagement and manifestos.

The initiative brings together technology, sustainability, democracy, leadership and citizenship, giving pupils meaningful experience in participating in the governance of their school.
