Fumesua, May 28, 2025 – In commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, five dedicated health professionals from the Fumesua Government Health Centre delivered a practical and engaging menstrual hygiene education session to students of Riverside Academy.

The outreach, held under the canopy at Block E of the school, brought together female students from Basic 4 to JHS 3. The session focused on empowering girls with vital knowledge and practical skills in managing their menstrual cycles with confidence and dignity.

Led by Joyce Ankoma, a Physician Assistant, the team facilitated interactive discussions and demonstrations on topics such as:

  • How to effectively manage menstruation

  • Supporting each other during periods

  • Proper use of sanitary pads

  • Safe and hygienic disposal of menstrual products

  • How to prevent infections through proper hygiene practices

Students were educated on the importance of:

  • Changing sanitary pads regularly (every 4–6 hours)

  • Washing hands before and after handling menstrual products

  • Cleaning the vaginal area with water only (no harsh soaps or douching)

  • Wearing clean, breathable underwear

  • Disposing used sanitary pads in a hygienic manner to prevent infections and environmental pollution

The health team included:

  • Mary Asantewaa, Midwifery Officer

  • Joan Awotwe, Senior Community Health Nurse

  • Rita Klinsman, Senior Community Health Nurse

  • Selina Darko, Senior Community Health Nurse

In her brief remarks, Priscilla Ewool, Adolescent Club Lead at Riverside Academy, commended the team from Fumesua Government Health Centre for their impactful session. She further encouraged them to strengthen the partnership with the school and continue bringing such essential health education sessions to support students’ development and well-being.

The session not only demystified menstruation but also encouraged open conversation and peer support among students, aligning with global efforts to end period stigma and promote menstrual equity.

Riverside Academy extends its sincere appreciation to the team from Fumesua Government Health Centre for their continued support in promoting the health and well-being of students.
